Just in time for track and field events to begin this weekend, the Cincinnati Zoo 's cheetah, Sarah, has shattered the previous record and is officially the fastest of all land mammals. She ran a 100-meter in 5.95 seconds — nearly four seconds faster than Usain Bolt.

At top speed, Sarah was going 61 mph

At the Cincinnati Zoo it is our goal to inspire every visitor with wildlife every day, and nothing inspires awe like seeing a cheetah running full blast in our Cheetah Encounter. We are very proud of Sarah, our World Record Holder, since she is a terrific ambassador for her cheetah cousins in the wild. The Cincinnati Zoo has supported cheetah conservation in Africa for more than 20 years, and thankfully, cheetahs are the one species that has a chance to out run extinction.

A Tragic History Of Hate Crimes Against Sikhs In The U.S.

$

Although the motives of the shooter in Wisconsin this morning are not yet clear, there is a bloody history of violence towards Sikhs in the United States since 9/11. Sikhism is a peaceful religion and its primary principles include equality and justice for all.

September 15, 2001 – Mesa, Arizona

49-year-old gas station owner Balbir Singh Sodhi was fatally shot. Frank Silva Roque, the shooter, mistakenly believed Sodhi was Muslim because of the clothes he wore, his turban, and his beard. Within 25 minutes of his death, the Phoenix police reported four further attacks on people who either were Middle Easterners or who dressed with clothes thought to be worn by Middle Easterners. Frank Silva Roque was convicted and sentenced to the death penalty, but the Arizona Supreme Court overturned the sentence for life in prison, citing an extremely low IQ and mental illness. On August 4, 2002, Balbir's brother Sukhpal was shot to death while driving a cab in San Francisco. It did appear that his shooting was an accident — a stray bullet from a nearby gang fight. Balbir's son, Sukhwinder, was asked about the second tragedy and said "What are you going to do with anger? We like peace and we are a peaceful people."

Dec 12, 2001 – Los Angeles, California

47-year-old Surinder Singh Sidhi was beaten by two men who entered his store, accused him of being Osama bin Laden, and beat him with metal poles. They said, "We'll kill bin Laden today," then hit him over twenty times with the poles. "The crime was regrettable but not surprising," Kirtan-Singh Khalsa, spokesman for the Khalsa Council, an international council for Sikh affairs, said. "We're deeply concerned by this event. But we are not shocked. Sikhs are accustomed to ridicule because of wearing turbans."

February 19, 2002 – Palermo, New York

Three 18-year-old boys and one 19-year-old girl burned down the Sikh temple Gobinde Sadan. The teens told authorities that they believed the temple was named "Go Bin Laden."

May 20, 2003 – Phoenix, Arizona

Avtar Singh, 52, a Sikh immigrant, was shot and wounded. Sigh parked his 18-wheeler in Phoenix and called his son to pick him up. While he was waiting, at least two young white men pulled up and started yelling. Singh said "I hear that voice: 'Go back to where you belong to.' And at the same time I heard the shot."

The Mars Curiosity Rover Has Landed On Mars To Look For Life

NASA has set up a live stream of this seminal event and it is fascinating. The rover is set to land on Mars at 1:31 AM ET today, Monday. Watch the mission live on NASA's stream.

Watch the livestream:

The landing includes a so-called “seven minutes of terror,” followed by confirmation of a safe landing in the form of a computer-code beep (it's the end of "Say Anything" all over again), followed by black and white photos just a few minutes after the landing. early Wednesday morning, we're expected to have our first high-resolution color photographs. This is is the first mission to look for extraterrestrial life on Mars since the 1970s, and is the most expensive mission to another planet ever undertaken.

UPDATE 1:38 AM ET: We have landed on Mars and have received Curiosity's first photo!

Did The Other U.S. Girls Do Their Hair For Gabby Douglas?

Last night Ali Reisman, Jordyn Wieber, and McKayla Maroney sat in the stands to cheer on Gabby Douglas in the Women's Uneven Bars Final. They all had their hair uncharacteristically slicked back with gel and pins and folded into buns in Gabby's characteristic but recently-criticized style. Were they sending a message?

Gabby's hairstyle has been subjected to criticism, but many have come to her defense

Gabby's hairstyle has been subjected to criticism, but many have come to her defense

“How ignorant is it of people to comment on her hair and she still has more competitions to go. Are you trying to ruin her self confidence? She has to go out there and feel good about herself, and if she feels good about herself on that floor, who are you to criticize her? What have you done to help contribute to her dream, that you felt it necessary to put it out there so that she could see it.”

South Korea's Yang Hak-Seon won the gold in the Men's Vaulting Final on Monday — the first Gymnastics gold medal for South Korea, ever. Yang is only nineteen years old, he has a vault named after him, he performed one of the best moments of gymnastics in these Olympics, AND he is super cute.

His signature move and one of the two vaults he performed to win gold is called "The Yang," because he invented it... He has said that his plans after the Olympics include adding another half twist to the already staggeringly difficult vault.

Image by MIKE BLAKE / Reuters

For winning South Korea it's very first Gymnastics gold, Yang is entitled to around $141,700 in prize money: 60 million from the government, and another 100 million from the Korea Gymnastic Association. He once said his dream was to “win gold and build a house for my parents, who live in a vinyl greenhouse.”
